Within water plants and pumping stations, it is often desirable to turn chemical pumps ON based upon the presence of positive flow. Sometimes, this is done using a mechanical “Flow Switch”, which completes an electric circuit upon the detection of flow in a pipe. Flow switches are often temperamental devices, and require regular tuning and maintenance.

Alternatively, a SCADAmetrics model EMP Signalizer can be combined with an inline flow meter and a simple time-delay relay to accomplish the same function — except with greater reliability.

The time-delay relay in our example is a Klemsan model Z1T-M2. This relay is rated for 10A and 250VAC; and it is available from Automation Direct (Atlanta, GA).

The drawing below illustrates how this can be accomplished.
