Spirax/Sarco (Blytheville, NC) is known as a leader in ultrasonic flow measurement technology.

The UTM20 (pictured below) is Spirax/Sarco’s mains-powered flow measurement system that is deployed in closed-pipe water and wastewater applications. It features ultrasonic sensing capability that can be used to calculate rate-of-flow (example: GPM), plus an accumulator functionality that can be used to calculate volumetric totalization (example: Gallons).

(This article also applies to the Dynasonics TFX-5000 ultrasonic flow meter.)

Major Advantages of Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Measurement Technology

  • No need to cut pipe to install the flow meter.
  • No need to shut down the process flow to install the flow meter
  • Installation size and complexity does not increase with pipe diameter size, providing especially economical equipment and installation labor savings for larger diameter pipes.
  • No moving or protruding parts inside the pipe — thereby lending itself to wastewater and other applications where the water includes solid content.

The UTM20 features traditional 4-20 milliamp and pulse SCADA signals, as well as fieldbus protocols. SCADAmetrics is pleased to announce that today’s firmware release for the Model MBE Modbus Encodalizer™ now adds Sensus and Neptune encoder protocols to this important flow meter, so that it may now be easily integrated into today’s modern AMI/AMR systems!

The following wiring diagram illustrates a typical application of the UTM20/Encodalizer Pair into a potable water distribution or wastewater system — where both AMI and SCADA signaling made are possible:

Connection of the Encodalizer to the UTM20 could not be easier: Two (2) wires interconnect the instruments: Modbus+(B) and Modbus(A). Configuration of the Encodalizer is also straightforward, requiring setup via 16 integral DIP switches from a lookup table.

The UTM20 factory default Modbus communication settings should not be modified.
