It features ultrasonic sensing capability that can be used to calculate <strong><em>rate-of-flow<\/em><\/strong> (example: GPM), plus an accumulator functionality that can be used to calculate <strong><em>volumetric totalization<\/em><\/strong> (example: Gallons).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(This article also applies to the <strong>Dynasonics TFX-5000 ultrasonic flow meter<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scadametrics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SpiraxSarco_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"547\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/scadametrics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SpiraxSarco_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3993\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scadametrics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SpiraxSarco_01.jpg 547w, https:\/\/scadametrics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SpiraxSarco_01-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 547px) 100vw, 547px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Major Advantages of Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Measurement Technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No need to cut pipe to install the flow meter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No need to shut down the process flow to install the flow meter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Installation size and complexity does not increase with pipe diameter size, providing especially economical equipment and installation labor savings for larger diameter pipes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No moving or protruding parts inside the pipe \u2014 thereby lending itself to wastewater and other applications where the water includes solid content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>UTM20<\/strong> features traditional 4-20 milliamp and pulse SCADA signals, as well as fieldbus protocols.  SCADAmetrics is pleased to announce that today\u2019s firmware release for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scadametrics.com\/products\/products.htm#MBE\">Model MBE Modbus Encodalizer&#x2122;<\/a><\/strong> now adds Sensus and Neptune encoder protocols to this important flow meter, so that it may now be easily integrated into today\u2019s modern AMI\/AMR systems!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The following wiring diagram illustrates a typical application of the <strong>UTM20\/Encodalizer Pair<\/strong> into a potable water distribution or wastewater system \u2014 where&nbsp;<strong>both<\/strong>&nbsp;AMI and SCADA signaling made are possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connection of the Encodalizer to the UTM20 could not be easier: Two (2) wires interconnect the instruments: Modbus<sup>+<\/sup>(B) and Modbus<sup>\u2013<\/sup>(A).
