We presently power with either an <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/data.energizer.com\/pdfs\/123.pdf\">Energizer(NYSE:ENR, St. Louis MO)<\/a><\/strong>-brand cell (EL123AP) or a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/b2b-api.panasonic.eu\/file_stream\/pids\/fileversion\/3663\">Panasonic<\/a><\/strong>-brand cell.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scadametrics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/UDA_v811_InnerView_Notations_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1607\" src=\"https:\/\/scadametrics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/UDA_v811_InnerView_Notations_01-1024x638.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scadametrics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/UDA_v811_InnerView_Notations_01-1024x638.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/scadametrics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/UDA_v811_InnerView_Notations_01-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scadametrics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/UDA_v811_InnerView_Notations_01-768x478.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The design of the Universal Duplexer is optimized for battery efficiency.\u00a0 First, CMOS switching technology was leveraged to ensure that the idle-mode current draw is less than 1\/100th of a microamp!<\/p>\n<p>Also, during read-mode operation, the Duplexer utilizes voltage boost technology to boost the supply voltage \u2014 ensuring that the device will continue to function even when the battery has a voltage sag due to age.<\/p>\n<p>As a convenience, the Universal Duplexer features an integrated <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>battery test button<\/strong><\/span> that illuminates an Indication LED when the battery is good.<\/p>\n<p>In applications, it is anticipated that battery life will be affected by several factors, including secondary AMI\/AMR device meter-reading frequency and by exposure to temperature extremes.\u00a0 It is noteworthy that the battery life will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>not<\/strong><\/span> be affected by the meter-reading frequency of the primary AMI\/AMR device.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Battery Stress Test<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In order to gauge <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>battery life expectancy<\/strong><\/span>, SCADAmetrics recently performed a battery stress test in which a secondary AMI\/AMR device was programmed to interrogate an encoder-type water meter, via the Universal Duplexer, at a high sampling rate of 15 reads per minute.<\/p>\n<p>After 21 days of operation \u2014 approximately 453,600 meter reads \u2014 the Universal Duplexer&#8217;s battery finally reached depletion.<\/p>\n<p>We were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>extremely pleased<\/strong><\/span> with this result!<\/p>\n<p>Considering that the typical AMI\/AMR endpoint meter-reading frequency is 4 meter-reads per hour maximum, that would equate to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>12.9 years of meter readings<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Because our test took place within such a short period of time, we were unable to measure the effects of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Self-discharge\">battery self-discharge<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, according to its specifications, the Energizer 123 Lithium cell features an <em>extremely low<\/em> self-discharge rate of 1% per year, when installed at a location whose temperature is 21C (70\u00b0F).\u00a0 For every 10C (18\u00b0F) above that, the self-discharge increases by 1%.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures colder than 21C (70\u00b0F), on the other hand, will lessen the self-discharge rate; but they will increase the internal resistance of the battery, causing the voltage to sag when the secondary AMI\/AMR device performs its read.\u00a0 However, the Duplexer is designed to overcome such internal resistance effects with its integral charge pump mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>When considering all factors, we are confident that under non-extreme temperatures and normal meter-reading sample rates, the Universal Duplexer will operate reliably for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>approximately 8 years<\/strong><\/span> before battery replacement is necessary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Important Note:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>primary AMI\/AMR meter-reading device<\/strong><\/span> will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>always<\/strong><\/span> be able to read the water meter \u2014 even if the lithium battery is depleted or removed.
